While it is no secret that my preferences in the subject of transformation tend towards the less common and more avant garde, I do not avoid more frequently-used species and situations just for the sake of being different. It is that, for the most part, such things do not interest me. But every once in a while, I find myself inspired to transform a high school senior into a wolf, or a cheerleader into a serpent, or illustrate some other reptilian or mammalian metamorphosis.
So this area of the Menagerie is devoted to the mammals and reptiles that cannot fly through the air or swim through the ocean. Consequently, those more common species of transformations - canines, felines, equines, bovines, and virtually any reptile - will dwell in the Bestiary, as well as lesser-used land animals such as elephants and others. Perhaps so many love these animals because they are the most human, the easiest to relate to. But as this gallery illustrates, relating to an animal and becoming one are two very different things.

Mammals
|
|
There can be no doubt that the most popular species in transformations are mammals. Metamorphoses into cats, dogs, horses, pigs, cows, and other warm-blooded furry creatures far outnumber transformations involving other types of animals. Perhaps this great interest in mammals stems from the fact that humans themselves are mammals, so changing from a girl into a cat, or from a boy into a wolf, isn't that unimaginable. But whatever the case may be, the modern era is without a doubt an Age of Mammals…

Black Panther Transformation

A person can run away from almost anything, but he or she can never run away from his or her own body. This young woman flees an unseen terror, even as transformation overtakes her.
Another Black Panther Transformation

Strange things may happen to a lost soul in the deepest reaches of the woods. Mysterious things. So mysterious, in fact, that not even I can explain them.
Bovine Transformation

Cow or bull… you be the judge. All this man knows is that he has sprouted large bovine horns, and is beginning to develop patches of fur on various parts of his body. Actually, considering that only bulls have horns, and not cows, this is most likely a transformation into the former. But that never stopped Gary Larson, did it?
If Dreamers were Horses...

The actual quote reads, "If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride." But I felt that an adaptation was in order. After all, this young fellow is perfectly happy as a human during the day… it is only at night, when his subconscious takes over, that he finds himself longing for four hoofed limbs. But never underestimate the power of the sleeping mind…
Elephant Transformation

One day I was looking around, and I realized that I had never seen an elephant transformation. So I set about to reconcile that unfortunate oversight. And I'm sure this woman is thankful for my endeavors to promote species equality in the field of transformations. She is doubtless pleased that I utilized a photo reference for the first time in my art, as well.
Wolf Transformation

I don't think there is any animal as favored in transformational artwork as the wolf. Thus, it has always been a subject that didn't interest me. But when a high school student is racing against both the clock and his own transformation, I simply can't resist. And you thought your standardized tests were bad...

Reptiles
|
|
For whatever reasons, reptiles are seen as alien, as being far more different from mammals than they actually are. Countless monsters are made reptilian, as if this makes them all the more fearsome: Godzilla, for example, or dragons, or even such mythological figures as Medusa, are all made more frightening by their reptilian semblances. So perhaps, transformations of a reptilian persuasion may be viewed as all the more terrifying… or all the more desirable.

Reverse Serpent Transformation

Transformation is the changing of one person, place, or thing into a different person, place, or thing. In this genre of fantasy art specifically, transformation most often consists of a person changing into an animal. But there is more than one way to get from point A to point B, as this young woman is learning. The process may differ, but the end result is still the same: a woman changing into a snake. Simple and typical, eh?

Once upon a time, I acquired a freeware morphing program that allowed the user to morph one image into another, using drag points and other features to create animations a bit more complex than simple fades. I no longer have this program, nor can I remember what it was called… but I did manage to create one morph before I lost it, an animation which four years later continues to impresses me.

Alicia Silverstone into Cat

This is the one and only animated morph I have ever created. I always thought Alicia Silverstone was cute, and one day (no doubt the fault of sleep-deprivation), I decided to change her into a cat. This is the result… a 4.19 MB morph in .avi format. If you have a slow connection speed, consider yourself warned.
