"...and feel come over thee,
Poor fugative, the feathery change."

The Earth has long been man's kingdom. But despite his seeming superiority over his environment, mankind is still a two-dimensional creature at best. We have always longed for the skies, either as a means of attaining freedom from the bonds of gravity, or else as an avenue of escape from the banality of the earth. And for the most part, this dream has never been truly fulfilled; without the crutch of technology, humankind remains a creature of the Earth and not of the Sky.

The Aviary is devoted to those who might transcend this boundary in physical form, becoming in part or in whole Children of the Wind. From birds to bats to prehistoric flying reptiles, there are many who call the breeze their home. And at times they are to be envied. But of course, oftentimes a dream is realized, only for the dreamer to discover that the dream has become a nightmare. Be careful what you wish for… especially the sky.

"Julie, the Reluctant Harpy Queen"
Julie, the Reluctant Harpy Queen
Julie had always been a dreamer; she seldom found the real world to be as wonderful as life must have been in the fantasy novels she always read. One day, after a particularly rough day at school, she came home and locked herself in her room, crying herself to sleep, wishing over and over that she might wake up and discover that she was really a princess or queen, ruling over some far-away fantasy kingdom. Upon waking up, Julie discovered that her wish had come true. But not quite in the way she would have expected…

"Nina's Necklace"
Nina's Necklace
One day, while cleaning out the attic of her new home, Nina found an empty, dusty birdcage, with a strange necklace at its bottom. Thinking the green stone might be valuable, she took the necklace, and put it around her neck. But with a flash of green light, Nina learned the hard way what had happened to the house's previous owner.

Pteranodon Transformation
Pteranodon Transformation
This is one of the oldest images in the Menagerie, and one of the only images not digitally inked to appear outside of the Discontinued Artwork area. But by whatever fluke of luck, this image came out well enough (in my opinion, at least) to warrant inclusion in the main areas of this site. It is a drawing of an archaeologist, discovering that extinction does not necessarily mean forever, and was created for the Rarely-Used Creature Transformations contest.

Spontaneous Avian Transformation
Spontaneous Avian Transformation
She began her metamorphosis seemingly without provocation; one minute she was walking down the hall of her high school, between one class and the next, and the next minute she was sprouting claws and feathers. She had become yet another victim of a spontaneous avian transformation.
