Alternative Transformations
Home Art Literature Resources Destinations

Even within a subject as varied and fanciful as transformations, there are certain topics which are touched upon more often than others. Certain types of transformations are more common than others. Certain species of animals are favored by the majority of artists or fans. Certain conventions are upheld, either consciously or unconsciously. Et cetera.

This area of the Menagerie is devoted to those transformations that fall upon the road less traveled… plants and inanimate objects, for example, or unclassifiable combinations of animals. There are those who might argue that all transformation artwork is weird. But even among the weird, there may be found the truly bizarre.

Alternative Transformations

"The Avatar"
The Avatar
No matter how many short stories, novels, movies, or Internet images are created to teach the fallacies of dabbling in powers beyond mortal comprehension, there inevitably comes those who feel that they alone are capable of wielding these supernatural forces… usually to their downfall. Case in point: two witches sought to summon an Elder God, one who had been banished from the Earth a millennia previous. Amazingly, they managed to summon the deity. But the god required material with which to form its new avatar. And it found what it needed in the flesh of those who had summoned it…

"Bubblegum Crisis"
Bubblegum Crisis
Early experiments with matter transportation technology were highly successful, but it was determined that a living organism could not be transported at the same time as a non-living object. Otherwise, the atoms of one tended to become irrevocably intermingled with the atoms of the other. So human transportation was possible, but only without clothing, weapons, or anything else. One cadet remembered to remove her uniform before transporting into orbit, but she forgot to spit out her gum…

Dolzard
Dolzard
Dr. Dolzard (his real name has long been forgotten) is one of the top geneticists in the world. His expertise with recombinant genetic alteration is unparalleled. And so is his love of experimentation. In fact, one of his earliest test subjects was himself; the result of that experiment was a body that combined the physiology of human, dolphin, and gecko. Dr. Dolzard doesn't let it bother him, however; truth be told, he's too busy to give it much thought. All that matters is furthering his own knowledge of genetic transformation.

"The Eye Elf"
The Eye Elf
Humans aren't the only intelligent species to be subject to the curse of bizarre transformation… Tiowynn was an elf who stumbled upon a strange altar in a section of the woods that was seldom visited by her people. The altar was marked with the rune of the Great Eye… and with its curse, as well. Tiowynn was transformed by the arcane magic, as a living testament that strange altars are generally best left untouched.

"Eye Pudding"
Eye Pudding
There is weird… and then there is weird. No one can deny the shock of having one's body sprout feathers or grow a reptilian tail. But sprouting eyes? Having one's flesh become soft and putty-like? The more alien the transformation, the more extreme the psychological trauma, as this young woman is quickly learning.

"The Glue Lizard"
The Glue Lizard The Glue Lizard 2
Laura Michaels woke up one morning to find her body vastly different than it had been the night before: she now had clawed flippers and a huge tail. Her skin had become smooth and reptilian, almost amphibious. And everywhere, her body secreted copious amounts of a very strong, very sticky glue. She now searches for a reason why, and hopefully a cure as well, fighting with her own body every sticky step of the way.

Salamander + Beholder + Girl
Salamander + Beholder + Girl
Question: What do you get when you cross a salamander, a beholder, and a young woman? Answer: screwed.

Tentacle Transformation
Tentacle Transformation
One of the biggest reasons why physical transformations may be seen as horrific is due to the loss of privacy of one's own body. Suddenly, a man's limbs are not his own. Without warning, a woman's body is changing against her will. At its best, physical transformation can be seen as an escape from the static confines of one's own body. At its worst, it comes close to cellular rape. This poor woman's transformation leans more towards the latter.

Tree Transformation
Tree Transformation
Beware the deepest shadows of ancient forests, and the magics they hold. For as this young lady has discovered, nature holds a balance that cannot be denied, even by the intelligence and rationality of the human species.

Unnamed Mutant
Unnamed Mutant
Not all transformations can be explained. This young woman was found in her current state, barely coherent from the trauma of her transformation and unable to remember her own name, let alone what had happened to her. She was quarantined and sequestered, in case her condition proved to be contagious. She is currently undergoing testing and observation, to determine the cause of her unique metamorphosis.

Unnamed Mutant #2
Unnamed Mutant #2
There are many strange creatures that dwell beneath the surface of any major city or metropolis… this bizarre mutant is only one of many. It is unknown whether this mutant is male or female, though physiology indicates a greater likelihood of the latter. But all attempts to capture the mutant have failed, so information is scant at best. Not every mystery wants to be solved.

"The Writer's Obsession"
The Writer's Obsession
Dedication to one specific concept or ideal is fine. Such specialization has led to untold benefits and developments. But obsession can be dangerous. To apply one's self to a single idea or practice at the total exclusion of all else is often harmful. And inevitably, one's own physical health may begin to suffer from this obsession… not to mention one's own physical shape.

The Nightmare Virus

It began as an effort by the country's top geneticists to solve the problem of world hunger on a cellular level… and ended with one of the most horrific plagues ever witnessed by humanity. Scientists sought to increase human strength and energy efficiency by tinkering with the genome. But instead, by sheer accident, a mutagenic virus was created, one which hideously transformed part or all of the bodies of those infected, causing the growth of multiple hungry mouths and the development of self-sentience in infected flesh. And then the virus escaped…

Alexis
The Nightmare Virus - Alexis
Alexis was a part-time lab technician who received a package in the mail one day, while at home for an extended weekend. The box appeared to be empty, but in reality it contained samples of the nightmare virus, which quickly infected Alexis and transformed her body. She is lucky in that she retained control of the majority of her body. But right now, Alexis isn't feeling very lucky.

Melissa
The Nightmare Virus - Melissa
Melissa was one of the geneticists working on the nightmare virus when it escaped and contaminated the facility. Her resultant exposure to the virus affected her hands and lower body, melding her limbs together into a sentient multi-mouthed monster, to which Melissa remained bound. She is no longer in control of herself, and can only struggle in vain against the fleshy prison her body has become.

Skin Factor

The members of Skin Factor are all girls or young women who have developed bizarre mutations involving their skin or flesh. The reasons for these mutations are mostly unknown, or are as varied as the girls who suffer from them. The group was assembled by Dr. Andrea Green, herself a victim of a strange metamorphosis, with the combined goals of finding a cure or cures, and giving the girls a place where they could feel safe and comfortable - or as comfortable in their own skin as possible.

"Glow"
Skin Factor: Glow
Out of all the members of Skin Factor, Julie "Glow" Flynn is perhaps the most comfortable with her mutation; her skin and hair constantly give off a pale, blue or white glow. In fact, she almost likes it, except for the fact that she cannot control it or turn it off. Julie is a rave girl, and loves to party with her friends. She sees her mutation as an external manifestation of some sort of inner desire to be the ultimate raver… or something like that. She is a little out of it (due to a combination of drug use and a perpetual lack of sleep), but is still fun to hang out with, someone others can count on.

"Red Slime"
Skin Factor: Red Slime Skin Factor: Red Slime 2
Rebecca Weiss is the youngest member of Skin Factor, as well as the newest member of the group. Her skin perpetually secretes a very thick, very sticky red slime; since everyone else in the group seemed to have some sort of nickname, Rebecca opted for the highly imaginative "Red Slime." Despite her difficulties with every day tasks, Rebecca has one of the most positive attitudes of anyone in Skin Factor. She deals with her mutation rather than cry about it because she doesn't really see herself as having much of a choice… and far more is accomplished with a smile than a tear, as far as she's concerned.

"Teflon"
Skin Factor: Teflon
Dr. Andrea Green is the founder of Skin Factor; she started the group in order to help those who suffered from bizarre transformations such as her own. Dr. Green goes by the nickname "Teflon" because her skin is completely frictionless. Every square inch of her body, including her hair and the inside of her mouth, is infinitely slippery… her skin looks like it is covered in oil, but it is light itself that slides from her body. She cannot hold anything without the use of gloves, and even her clothing has a tendency of slipping off unless it is secured. Luckily, Dr. Green comes from an affluent family, and has enough money to fund the Skin Factor organization. She uses her resources, as well as her education in biology and chemistry, to study the mutations she and the other members of the group have experienced, in order to determine what caused them.
